Race Reports July 2005 – June 2006
Sunday 24th June, Humber Bridge Half Marathon.
The weather was warm and sunny for an undulating course and a very well organised race with plenty of (much needed) water stations. Three Bourne Town Harriers took part: Vaughan Roberts 32nd in 1.26.29, Shaun Towell 559th in 1.57.55 and Malcolm Scriven 972nd in 2.23.11. There were 1083 finishers in total. We all thought it was a demanding course but enjoyed running over the bridge (and back again!).
Sunday 4th June, Woodhall Spa 10K
Whilst a few of us opted for a social run in Bourne woods, 5 race hardened veterans journeyed north to Woodhall Spa for the 10K. Mark Botteley put in an exceptional performance to finish 10th in a time of 35:55 in huge field of over 700 runners, Roland, Fiona, Penny and Malcolm all had good runs as well.
Sunday 21st May, Deepings 10K.
Another fast flat course and some more excellent performances. Mark Botteley was 3rd in 35:53, Ben Winter was 24th in 41:15 and Des Adey was 49th in 44:52.
Friday 19th May, Dyke Fun Run.
On a cool evening the club dominated this event which we do like to support. Six out the first 8 runners were from Bourne including the first 4. A late entry, Tom opted to run in civvies (ie he didn’t bring any kit but he happened to be wearing shorts and trainers). In a tight finish (so I am told, I was miles behind) Adam Hilless held off Tom to win the final sprint in. They were closely followed by the 2 Matts, Green and Grace, Nick Osbourn was 7th and Richard (I’ve just run a marathon) Smithers was 8th. There was a good turnout from juniors as always, for full results there is a link on the results page.
Sunday 14th May, Eye 10K.
Some really good performances on a fast flat course in a big field of 405 runners. Vaughan Roberts was 17th in 37:02, Dave Hart was 33rd in 38:09 and Des Adey 146th in 45:01.
Saturday & Sunday 13th-14th May, Lincs County Championships.
Quite a few club members entered the championships and there were some good efforts in a variety of events including:- Hannah Ledger in U15 100 & 200, Jon Bean in the U20 400 and 800, Ian Organ in the U15 800, Stephen Organ in U20 800, Tom Honniball in the 800, Adam Hilless in the U20 1500, James Christen in the U15 3000, Richard Lomas-Brown in the 5000, James and Roland Stevens in the Pole Vault and James again in the U17 Javelin.
Sunday 7th May, 25th Shakespeare Marathon, Stratford-upon-Avon.
Disappointed two years in succession at not running in the FLM, Richard Smithers' sights were set on 3:15:00 to secure a place for next year as 'good for age'. On a testing two-lap undulating course, Richard ran an even pace but, as distance took its toll, needed to finish the last 1.2 miles at sub-7 minute mile pace. He managed it with just 11 seconds to spare, finishing in 3:14:49 and beating his previous best by over 12 minutes.
Sunday 30th April, Langtoft 10K/Bourne Rotary 5.
On a great day for running it was shame that these 2 favourite events clashed. A number of juniors did the Langtoft fun run whilst Mark Botteley was 3rd in the 10K closely followed by Vaughan Roberts in 5th, and Dave Hart 16th. A total of 16 seniors did this event.
Meanwhile in Bourne woods several club members opted to run the Rotary 5, with no official results to hand, but some good pictures in the local papers, Richard Lomas-Brown, Adam Hilless, Matt Green, Jon Bean and Ben Winter ran this event, (apologies to anyone I have missed).
Sunday 23rd April, London Marathon.
Whilst most of us just watched the marathon Richard Lomas Brown finished in 3:03:43 and raised a lot of money for charity, as did Gosia Wilkie who finished in 4:06:17. Shawn Towell completed the race in 4:24:30, and Carol Knight (our Jersey based runner) finished in 3:06:15 and was 129th in the ladies event.
Grantham Track & Field.
On the same day there was a Lincs Track & Field event at Grantham, there were some good junior performances and the Stevens father and son duo clean sweeped the pole vault again, there were also some good performances from Beth, Abi and James Christen, Masie Walton, Hannah Ledger and Adam Swallow.
Ranby 10 Miler.
Richard Smithers ran in the Ranby 10 mile race on 23 April, in his build up to the Shakespeare marathon on 7 May where he is hoping to beat 3 hours 15 mins (the qualifying time for London). Richard checked predictor sites as to what time he needed to do for his preparations to be on schedule; 67:30 was the consensus. On an undulating course including a mile or so off road, Richard was delighted to finish 35th out of 218 runners in 67:38, a PB by more than 3 mins, albeit he hasn't run a 10 mile race since the Nene Valley 10 in 2004.
Sunday 9th April, Grantham Track & Field.
Quite few juniors and seniors attended this event, and there some excellent results and performances, Dave Grace as usual entered several events and won the shot. Sunday 18th December, Swavesey Frostbite.
Conditions, freezing but bright.
This was the 100th Frostbite and fittingly it lived up to its name, a temperature of minus 2 saw a reduced field, but good turnout by Bourne with 21 seniors putting in a very creditable performance, finishing 6th on the day and lying in 4th overall. I might have imagined it but I sure there was gasp or two when that position was announced, and it wasn’t from Bourne runners present. For the juniors Georgina Woods and Dan Organ ran well.
Sunday 4th December, Nene Valley 10 miles.
Several of the seniors turned out for this competitive local 10 miler, despite attending the annual Christmas bash the night before. The first Frostbite of the season was down at St Neots, a very young junior side did well to finish 5th overall against some very strong opposition on a short fast course. Meanwhile the seniors managed to field a magnificent total of 21 runners, including 2 ladies, so even though some of our top runners were injured or below par we came a fantastic 4th overall. The club returned to Grimsthorpe on this Sunday, but unusually for us, mainly as marshals helping out at an event organised by Cancer Research, slightly different to our Grimsthorpe course it was interesting and enjoyable to marshal and watch. The event went well, and well done to Rachel Williams who was the first lady runner home.
